Raise the Roof: Community Care Campaign Helps Families Stay Housed

Families across Hampton Roads are facing unprecedented housing pressures, and ForKids is calling on the community to help.
From May 1–15, 2026, ForKids will host Raise the Roof, a two-week, community-wide care campaign designed to help families stay safely housed and prevent homelessness before it begins.
Raise the Roof brings together local businesses, schools, religious organizations, civic groups, and neighbors to form teams, raise funds, and spark conversations about housing stability, all while having fun and building community.
“Families are doing everything they can to stay afloat, but too many are just one crisis away from losing their home,” said Thaler McCormick, CEO of ForKids. “Raise the Roof is about showing families they’re not alone. When our community comes together, we can create real, lasting stability for parents and children who need it most.”

Why It Matters
Housing instability affects every part of a child’s life, from education and health to emotional well-being. Funds raised through Raise the Roof directly support ForKids’ core services, including housing stabilization, emergency response, and long-term support that helps families break the cycle of homelessness and poverty.
Why May?
Raise the Roof takes place during National Affordable Housing Month, a time dedicated to elevating the importance of safe, affordable housing and collective action to strengthen housing security across the region.
