Israeli Artist Hanoch Piven to Lead ForKids Kids in Workshop

Hanoch Piven, an internationally celebrated Israeli artist best known for his celebrity caricatures that have been published in international magazines including Rolling Stone, Newsweek, Time and The Atlantic Monthly, will conduct a workshop for ForKids kids and volunteers at the ForKids Suffolk Regional Services Center on Thursday, October 18th. Piven will lead the children and adults in creating self-portraits made of “tiny found objects” such as feathers, broken toys, seashells, old photos, nuts & bolts and buttons.

Pieces of art created in the workshop next week will be on display for the first time at the ForKids Suffolk Center Grand Opening Celebration November 8thand on permanent display in the Center’s lobby thereafter.

In preparation for the workshop next week, ForKids has requested that the community help with the project by gathering their own “tiny found objects” and dropping them by any ForKids location by October 17th. These tiny pieces of discarded junk will become treasured art through the genius of Hanoch Piven and the creativity of the ForKids kids.

Thaler McCormick, ForKids CEO, said, “We are thrilled that our children will have the experience of creating self-portraits with an artist of Mr. Piven’s caliber. His emphasis on creativity, art and play in education will not only be meaningful for the children, but for our education team as well. We are most grateful for this opportunity.”

United Jewish Federation of Tidewater is presenting Hanoch Piven and his work through Israel Today October 15 – 26. Mr. Piven is their first artist-in-residence. During his two-week visit, in addition to the ForKids workshop, Mr. Piven will lead a variety of workshops throughout the area for people of all ages, backgrounds and ethnicities. His work will be displayed in the Leon Family Gallery at the Simon Family Jewish Community Center in Virginia Beach throughout his residency with Israel Today.
