Partner Spotlight: Chanco on the James

For many children, summer camp is a rite of passage. Through its partnership with ForKids, Chanco on the James helps ensure that children experiencing housing instability can share in that experience.

Founded in 1968, Chanco on the James is guided by its core values of friendship, spirit and love. Thanks to generous donors, the camp provides scholarships and other support that make camp accessible to all families.

Since 2015, ForKids and Chanco have partnered to send about 100 children to summer camp, opening the door to experiences that build confidence, independence and lifelong memories.

“Kids dealing with homelessness and housing instability need this camp experience more than most,” said Executive Director Gareth Kalfas. “Every child deserves the chance to be a camper, and that shouldn’t be limited by financial circumstances.”

ForKids helps families navigate registration, transportation and other logistics, while Chanco works to ensure every camper feels included. ForKids also provides funds for canteen purchases and other incidental expenses, so children can fully participate alongside their peers without feeling singled out because of their family’s financial circumstances.

“We are incredibly grateful to Chanco on the James, its donors and the many ForKids supporters who help make these experiences possible for our children,” said Shereka Steele, ForKids Director of Youth Development. “For many of our students, camp is more than just summer fun. It’s a chance to build confidence, make friends, try new things and simply be kids.”
