The YMCA of South Hampton Roads officially opened its remodeled Teen Center at the Suffolk Family YMCA on Tuesday, March 31, creating a dedicated space designed specifically for teens to feel safe, connected, and supported. In addition to the Y’s teen programs, the dedicated space will serve as the home of the ForKids Suffolk Teen Program, expanding access to safe, structured after-school support for Suffolk teens.

The ForKids Teen Program launched in Suffolk in 2023 to address a critical gap in age-appropriate after-school options for teenagers. ForKids and the YMCA share complementary missions focused on youth development, and this partnership brings together the strengths of both organizations to better serve young people.

“This partnership reflects what’s possible when organizations come together around a shared purpose,” said Thaler McCormick, CEO of ForKids. “We are deeply grateful to the YMCA team for opening their doors and sharing their space and to the City of Suffolk for its continued support of innovative solutions for young people. Together, we are creating a place where teens feel seen, supported and empowered.”
Suffolk is one of the fastest-growing communities in the region, with a population now nearing 95,000. As the city grows, so does the need for consistent, youth-centered spaces where teens can build relationships, develop confidence and prepare for what comes next.

The Teen Center responds to that need by providing structured leadership and character development opportunities; academic support and exposure to workforce readiness tools and technology; a safe gathering space for peer connection; access to trusted adult mentors who guide and encourage teens; and access to the Y’s recreation and wellness opportunities like swimming, basketball and fitness

“This is an intentional investment in Suffolk’s teenagers,” said Anthony Walters, President and CEO of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads. “When young people have a place where they feel known, supported and challenged to grow, it strengthens families and the entire community.”

The Teen Center was made possible through a shared investment from the Y and ForKids, reflecting the two organizations’ commitment to expanding opportunity for youth and strengthening families across Suffolk.
