Artist Letitia Lee recently returned to ForKids for an extra-special art session with some of our kids, and it felt like a homecoming.
Letitia holds a special place in our hearts. She created the vibrant mural that welcomes families and visitors to Sokol Place, our emergency shelter at Landmark Center. When families move from shelter into homes of their own, they sign their names on the mural. In doing so, they transform Letitia’s mural into art that belongs to everyone who passes through our doors.
Letitia was delighted to see so many new names and initials added since her last visit. We’re just as delighted that this tradition continues to grow.
Art is central to so much of what we do at ForKids, from our full-time (rock star!) art teacher working with children and families in shelter and after-school programs, to the annual ForKids Art Auction, to the trauma-informed design of our Birdsong and Landmark Centers. We love that our spaces are filled with light, plants and art, all of which help people feel safe, welcome and at home.
While she was visiting, we asked Letitia when she knew she wanted to be an artist.
“I didn’t,” she said. “It was just like breathing.”
We know many of our kids and families feel the same way. Thank you, Letitia, for sharing your talent and heart with our community.
