A Summer to Celebrate: 126 Kids Take Part in Dare to Be Camp 

As summer ends, we’re celebrating the joy and unforgettable memories made at Dare to Be, ForKids’ summer camp. 

This year, 126 campers spent the season learning and discovering what it means to be curious, confident and brave. Thanks to the support of ForKids donors and partners, the camp experience each year is free to all participants.  

“From visits to the library and zoo to hands-on cooking classes and a field day waterslide, each day brought opportunities for campers to learn through experience,” said Shereka Steele, ForKids Director of Youth Development. “Our middle and high school campers also built practical life skills that will support them far beyond the summer months.” 

This year’s theme, “Africa,” sparked curiosity in meaningful ways.  

“One camper even chose a Nigerian flag pin after a dentist visit because he recognized it from camp,” said Terry Mejia, ForKids Academic Support Manager. “It’s a beautiful reminder that joyful learning can show up anywhere, and sometimes where we least expect it!”  

As the Education Team preps for the start of academic year programming on Sept. 14, they’re looking back on the camp season with gratitude, Shereka added. 

“We are so grateful to the staff, volunteers, partners and supporters who made Dare to Be a summer full of possibility,” she said. “Most of all, we’re celebrating our campers — for everything they dared to learn, try and be!”
