ForKids has received a grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation to support emergency shelter and housing programs for families experiencing homelessness in Hampton Roads.

Homelessness is especially challenging for families with children. ForKids’ comprehensive services provide a path from housing crisis toward stability, supporting families at every step.

“ForKids help with families that are rebuilding their lives and working towards economic mobility during challenging times,” said Evette Roots, Vice President, Philanthropy and Community Impact for Wells Fargo.

At Sokol Place, ForKids’ family emergency shelter and the largest of its kind in Southeastern Virginia, up to 20 families find a safe place to stay while working with case managers to secure permanent housing. From there, many families transition into ForKids’ Housing Support programs, which cover move-in costs, provide temporary rent assistance, and continue one-on-one case management to help parents increase income and stability.

“Every family deserves a safe place to call home,” said Jessica Milloy, ForKids’ Director of Shelter and Housing Services. “Support from grants and our philanthropic community can help families take those first, most difficult steps toward stability and independence, creating a foundation with the potential to change lives for generations.”

With housing costs soaring and affordable options increasingly out of reach for low-income families, this investment comes at a critical time. In Hampton Roads, a parent earning minimum wage must work 73 hours a week to afford a modest one-bedroom rental.
